License Types: SystemId-based vs Floating Licenses

By default ntop commercial licenses are bound to a systemId that uniquely identifies a system using host information including the CPU type and MAC address of the management NIC. In case a user changes he hardware platform running the license, the systemId changes and thus the license is invalidated. For each orderId, a user can revoke free-of-charge an existing license once. If the hardware platform change more than once, the end user needs to contact ntop that will decide if the license can be furtehr revoked free-of-charge or if a fee will be applied.

In case of dynamic environments such as containers or virtual systems, the systemId can dynamically change and thus a floating license need to be used. The license manager (LM) implements systemId-independent licenses that are validated using an application (the LM application) that must be installed on a host whose systemId is permanent. Considered that LM licenses can be used on floating hosts, their price is 20% more than the systemId-based licenses and need to purchases contacting the ntop sales team.
