Short ntop Roadmap for 2022

Those who attended our latest 2021 webinar, had a feeling of what are ntop plans for this year. In summary we keep focusing on cybersecurity and visibility, planning to further enhance our existing tools as follows: nDPI: we plan to improve detection new threats and make it more configurable by end users. The idea is that endusers can further extend the core via configuration files in order to catch malware or contacts to suspicious/infected hosts. We do not want to turn nDPI into a rule-based tool such as many IDS …

Introducing ntop Professional Training Service

Many of you are asking professional training, in particular in companies and large installations. Over the years we have produced many software applications that allow you to improve network visibility and block cybersecurity threats. In this over increasing ecosystem, we acknowledge that blog posts and webinars might not be sufficient for everyone. For this reason we have created a professional training service designed for people who want to master ntop products in their daily activities. The idea is to divide the training in 5 session of 90 minutes each, so …

Monitoring Containerised Application Environments with eBPF

Earlier this week ntop and InfluxData held a joint webinar about monitoring containerised applications. We have discussed solution for monitoring both legacy (e.g. non-containerised) and containerised applications, what are the technologies we can use. As most of you know, we have developed libebpfflow that is an open source library for generating IPFIX-like flows not using packets but system events we capture with eBPF. In addition to this, we are developing a new version of the nProbe product family that is able to also exploit Netlink to complement eBPF statistics with traffic counters. …

How ntop built a web-based traffic analysis and flow collection with InfluxDB

A couple of days ago InfluxData hosted a ntop webinar about how we have integrated InfluxDB into ntopng. Those who have not attended it can give a look at the presentation slides as well watch the webinar. In essence: ntopng is based on RRD for timeseries As networks grow, ntopng needs to store more time series more granular. RRD is file based, that is a good things as configuration is minimal, but it does not scale on mid/large networks. We need an alternative, and found InfluxDB to be the best option …

Comparison of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) Tools for Traffic Classification

From time to time we receive emails form people asking how nDPI compares with other similar toolkits. Licio Marchetti has shared this report Comparison of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) Tools for Traffic Classification written by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya that says: “the best accuracy we obtained from NDPI (91 points), PACE (82 points), UPC MLA (79 points), and Libprotoident (78 points)”. So nDPI looks in good shape 🙂 This said, last week we have improved quite bit the Bittorrent and Skype dissectors and we have create a small test tool that demonstrate …

NetFlow-Lite and nProbe: a Tutorial

Today we have held a webinar about NetFlow-Lite with both Cisco and Plixer. Subscribers of this blog should know by now what is NetFlow-Lite and why nProbe is necessary to exploit this technology. Nevertheless you might be interested to know more about NetFlow-Lite, both in terms of features and usage scenarios. Below you can find a could of presentations about this topic that I think are worth reading: ntop, Implementing a NetFlow Cache for NetFlow-Lite Cisco Systems, Catalyst 4948E NetFlow-lite ntop, Using nProbe as NetFlow-Lite Aggregator In interested, you can also see the video …
